Hockley Day Centre Staff and Service Users

A Hat trick for Hockley

Hockley Day Centre braved the Dragons’ Den not once, not twice but three times for funding to implement service improvements for their clients.

The day centre helps adults with learning disabilities to keep their independence, provides an opportunity for careers to have their own space and time and creates a space through which service users can maintain links with the wider community.

The funding from Dragons’ Den has been used to set up and deliver their Acupack shredding and recycling business which is proving very popular and creating revenue. They were granted funding to install CCTV at their premises to ensure the safety and security of the service users who are involved in the out of hours Aspirations social club. The final funding was granted to set up their Hockley Xchange conferencing facility with onsite catering facilities to be able to host community events and provide an income for the centre.

All of these initiatives are built around improving their service user’s experiences and skills at the day centre and generating some income to reinvest into existing projects and further developments.

The Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes visited the centre to meet the staff he hasn’t had the opportunity to meet before, answer any of their questions and be able to see for himself the services we provide to our citizens.

Stephen commented “What impressed me about the day centre was the innovation and business drive of the staff, but orientated towards full engagement of their clients. All the business ideas centered around useful activity for the day centre users and it was obvious that they responded positively to those challenges.”
