Spring Hill Library back open for business!

In May this year, BEST Manager Deep Hunjan and her colleagues from Spring Hill Library, approached the Dragons’ Den asking for funding to re-launch the library and to encourage the return of the community to the library as well as promoting its facilities. Also, they would like the funding to hold an open day with a range of activities for both children and adults: e.g craft, story telling and information stalls. The library has been closed since July 2010 – February 2011 due to building work, redecorating plus linking the library to the new Tesco store which has newly been built next door. It has recently re-opened after a refurbishment and the team want to work in partnership with local organisation.
The re-launch of the library took place on Saturday 23 July 2011. The team were very fortunate that Tesco management allowed them to promote their publicity in the Tesco store. That helped a lot as a lot of people were not familiar with the library. All the flyers were sent to all the agencies, local organisations and local schools. The library was also promoted on the Spring Hill web page.
About 100 people with a diverse community attended the re-launch.
The day was a great success as 23 children and two adults joined the library and 23 children joined the Circus Stars - Reading Challenge for the children during summer holidays. Reading challenge encourages the children to read 6 books and also write or draw a picture about the book they have read. As part of the entertainment, there was a balloon modelling activity – which encouraged both children and adults to join the library, face painting and henna (mehndi) stalls for both adults and children. Roy MacFarlane - Birmingham Poet laureate was also invited and was excellent with the family audience. The refreshments were provided by Tesco.
