Red Hair Day for Social Care Team
On 18th December 2008, the City Hospital Social Care team within the Adults & Communities Directorate, held a charity day to raise money for the Red Cross. This event was to aid the work of their partners, the Red Cross, and help as many patients as possible with a speedy recovery.
The team work closely with the Red Cross assisting people being released from hospital after an operation, making sure their release is not only timely but without stress or worry.

The fundraisers in action
They mainly work in partnership with the Red Cross’ Home Care teams. These teams offer services such as transportation, helping in the home, and making sure the patient settles back into life after a hospital stay. These services are offered on a short term basis to aid recovery and are provided free of charge, however the charity does ask for a donation to help with costs but no one will ever be refused help if they cannot pay.
The Social Care team, under the watchful eye of BEST leader Eunice Beasley and colleague Javed Rasul, set up two event areas. One in the main reception of the new treatment centre and the other in the entrance to the staff canteen, coercing people as they passed to join in and support the cause.
The charity event consisted of being sponsored to wear red wigs for one day; there were raffles, classic competitions such as guess the bear’s name and how many sweets in the jar. They also took collection buckets round the hospital after any change people could spare.
Javed Rasul said "The Red Hair day brought the Team together to join in an event that was fun and helped to relieve stress and achieve something together". Javed has worked along side BEST Leader Eunice Beasley to get this event up and running.

The City Hospital Social Care Team
Mike Reed, manager of the team, said of the day, "It will have achieved all of our objectives, to raise the profile of our Team, that of the Red Cross and raised a substantial sum of money to help support the work of the Red Cross in discharging our service users safely back to the community".
The City Hospital team have used BEST to improve their working relationship with each other and their partners. They have so far raised approximately £1000.
The Red Cross have since written a letter of thanks to the team for a very well organized event and hoped that something similar could take place every year.
