Birmingham City Council’s Human Resources department has received a top national award for its BEST project.

This year’s PPMA Award for ‘HR Innovation’ was awarded to Birmingham City Council for its BEST (Belief, Excellence, Success, Trust) project. BEST is the Council’s employee engagement programme, part-designed by council workers, which helps engage and empower staff; promoting a culture of innovation. It is designed to motivate staff to generate and act upon ideas in order to improve the quality of the service delivered to Birmingham citizens.

Raffaela Goodby, Employee Engagement Officer for Birmingham City Council, accepted the award with HR Director Andy Albon, and Head of Organisation Development, Richard Billingham, at the ceremony in the Midland Hotel, Manchester. The PPMA awards represent the pinnacle of achievement in a variety of award categories and are part of an annual national conference.

Raffaela comments: “I was delighted and honoured to be able to accept this award on behalf of Councillor Alan Rudge, Chief Executive Stephen Hughes and all of the employees in Birmingham City Council who have contributed to the success of the BEST programme.

“This award recognises the creativity, passion and innovation of all of our BEST leaders, managers and teams, who have put our citizens at the heart of everything we do, and used their BEST workshops to improve the service that we deliver.

“The PPMA awards are the ideal opportunity to showcase the work we are doing on engagement here in Birmingham, to other councils across the UK, and to celebrate our employees’ success.”

The BEST programme has been championed by Councillor Alan Rudge, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources at Birmingham City Council.

He comments: “I am delighted at the national recognition that this project has received as BEST contributes to Birmingham City Council’s efficiencies agenda and commitment to serve the public and improve services. It also demonstrates the passion and pride that our employees have in making this happen.”
