Deaf Awareness Scheme

Recruiting Deaf Awareness Champions, breaking down the barriers...

One of the Deputy Lord Mayor’s Len Gregory challenges for 2011 was to recruit Deaf Awareness Champions in each Directorate across the council to promote the use of British Sign Language (BSL) and deaf awareness.

The Deaf Awareness Scheme has recruited and trained over 100 Champions throughout the Council. These Champions are advocates of deaf awareness and they aim to improve the communication links between the deaf and the hearing world.

The scheme recently won a Chamberlain Award for the Equalities and Community Cohesion Catergory, following their success the scheme is looking to recruit front line employees to become Champions.

Champions will be required to attend a 1 hour ½ taster sessions which will take place at the Council House in March 2012. The taster sessions are designed to give an insight into BSL and how the Deputy Lord Mayor needs your help in promoting and raising awareness through the Council. The Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes, has agreed that employees who wish to become a Champion and therefore attend a taster session are able to do this within working hours, providing they have obtained agreement from their line manager.

If you are a Birmingham City Council customer front facing employee who spends the majority of your time interacting face to face with our customers and are interested in becoming a BSL Champion, please express your interest via email

We would be delighted to hear from you should you already have training in BSL at level 3 to assist the Deputy Lord Mayor in supporting and developing the Champions’ role.
