New Heights for Generation BEST

Last updated 28th May 2009

Generation BEST member, Jonathan Adey, a Senior Climate Change Officer from Birmingham Environmental Partnership will be one of only 25 delegates representing the UK at a prestigious political summit this July.

The annual Wilton Park British-German forum was set up by Margaret Thatcher and Chancellor Kohl in 1985 and each year brings together 50 high achieving young people from Britain and Germany to discuss key political, economic and social challenges.

Jonathan was nominated to attend the conference after Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes, was invited to find a young high-flier from the council to take part. The brief was passed to Generation BEST, and Jonathan was selected from four very strong applications.

The theme of this year’s conference will be “Can we shape capitalism to suit our future?”, and participants will be invited to engage in high level and stimulating debate on the global financial crisis and to consider a key question for our future; how can we shape capitalism to integrate business success, social responsibility and environmental sustainability?

Jonathan was the ideal candidate for a conference on this theme, with a PhD in sustainable fisheries policy and his keen interest in all aspects of sustainable development. He said; “The issues that will be discussed during this event are all global problems which will require both international and local solutions. To be able to engage with delegates from Germany and across the UK on these cross cutting issues is an excellent opportunity to learn from others about novel solutions that Birmingham can use to deliver its carbon reduction commitment and embrace the ‘green economy’.”

This year's programme includes a chance to meet MPs, a tour of the House of Lords and lunch at the German Embassy.
