'Living It' - January 2010

The first BEST Leader of the month for 2010 is Saera Boliyn from the Shakti Asian Day Centre in Nechells within the Adults & Communities Directorate, who was nominated by Sultana Dodhy. Saera has been a very committed BEST Leader, always making sure that actions are completed and communicating with colleagues and service users to find out what they need and to build up trust. One outcome of their workshops that Saera was personally responsible for was ensuring that all service users had access to a computer. This made a huge difference to those at the centre who now have daily access to the internet and are able to do things such as emailing, shopping and keeping up to date with family news from across the globe.
Winning the BEST Team of the month award for January were the Environmental Wardens Team, from Chief Executive's Directorate, who were nominated by team members Lynne Tandy & Caroline Stewart. Their team is not frightened to put forward suggestions and accept that management are not always able to endorse actions. However, they have 9 completed actions, 18 more ongoing and they show no signs of stopping. The team have a flexible can do attitude and despite being fixed contract workers, do not let the lack of security affect their attitudes to their job. To date the team have worked with the local fire service to deliver workshops in schools about reducing both litter and arson, with British Waterways on clearing a local canal bank by their offices and with a local school on making an allotment available for members of the community, especially ensuring disabled access. They are always willing to help the wider council meet its objectives and strive especially to encourage local residents to help take responsibility for having a clean, safe, green city
Congratulations to all our winners on their success. If you would like to nominate someone or are looking for more information regarding the Monthly “Living It” Awards please contact the team on 0121 675 1579, email BEST or go to the 'Living It' section on this website.
