Employee engagement is increasingly becoming a key vital sign of an organisation's health. Indeed, the recently published MacLeod Review, an in-depth Government study, stresses its importance in terms of wide-ranging benefits for both organisations and employees. It is crucial to boosting the reputation and local standing of a council as Employees act as both advocates and detractors.
The current economic climate presents the local government HR profession with a number of huge challenges. From a people perspective, there is a very clear need to increase employee engagement, improve performance at the front line, manage talent and communicate effectively. In many areas more will need to be achieved with fewer resources.
Councils applying for this award were asked to: • Provide evidence of high levels of employee engagement
• Demonstrate evidence of staff involvement in terms of their active contribution to the success of the organisation
• Demonstrate a commitment to sharing with staff a clear vision and key objectives for where the organisation is going
• Show how the organisation is delivering progress in areas identified as in need of improvement
• Identify the organisation's principal achievements in the workplace over the past year
• Provide evidence that staff believe the Council performs well in the following areas: staff being consulted/upward communications;effective line management; effective leadership; staff receiving feedback on performance
•Show evidence of how diversity and equalities policies have been successfully translated into working practices
We are delighted to be a finalist at these awards and will bring you more news as soon as we have it. Keep an eye on the LGC on Thursday 17th December 2009 for full write up and news of the other finalists.
