The Lady Mayoress

Lady Mayoress Gill Gregory
Who is the Lady Mayoress?
Gill Gregory was born in Stirchley on February 27th 1944. She attended Stirchley J&I School before moving onto Selly Park Girls School. Gill’s first job was as a Counter Clerk at Bournbrook Sub-Post Office, a role she pursued after her marriage to Len in 1964 and until the birth of their Daughter, Diane. Their Son, Michael, was born two years later.
Whilst much of their early married life revolved around the family and Len’s academic progress, Gill honed her craft skills by attending classes in many subjects including woodwork, metalwork, cookery, English modern and local History. Following their move to Kings Heath, Gill became a volunteer helper at the local school leading her to study for a Nursery Nurse Qualification. Gill then began a 15 year career as a Classroom Assistant at St Paul’s RC J&I School, Kings Norton. It was around this time that Gill together with her Sister began the long term care of their Parents, both of whom were victims of Strokes.
In 1988, Gill’s working life took an exciting turn when she opened a specialist needlecraft shop, “Crafts ‘n’ Sew On”. This she ran until her retirement in 2004. Gill has been a member of Birmingham’s Embroiderers’ Guild for over 30 years and has served as their Branch Secretary. Her interest in the Guild continues to date.
Always actively supporting Len’s interest in both Politics and the local area, Gill particularly enjoyed her association with a community Theatre Group. Along with giving help to other voluntary Organisations she has also served as Ward Chairman and Ward Secretary.
