Generation BEST team speak of success

Last updated 7th April 2009

Fresh from success as Young Metropolitan Borough Council of the Year winners, Generation BEST members Paul Lowney and Catherine Poyner, have recently returned from Lancaster where they represented Birmingham in the grand final of the Young Local Authority of the Year.

Having won acclaim from the judges in the previous round with their paper on social housing, this time the team were very appropriately asked to talk about ‘Success’, one of the Council’s core values and a tribute to their earlier achievement!

The team had a fantastic time and made the most of a rare opportunity to practise public speaking. They were highly praised for the quality of their writing, but the overall title of Young Local Authority of the Year was finally awarded to East Sussex.

Speaking after the event, Catherine was grateful to Generation BEST for having the opportunity to take part, develop presentation skills and meet and share experiences with young people from other UK councils.

All six Generation BEST competitors have since been rewarded for their efforts with an invitation to lunch with the Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes, and the chance to celebrate at one of BEST’s Recognition Events.

If you would like to represent Birmingham in next year’s Young Local Authority of the Year competition, or to take part in any other of the exciting and developmental Generation BEST activities, then please get in touch.
