Generation BEST Take On Community Regeneration
The regeneration of one of Birmingham’s most vulnerable communities was on the agenda for members of Generation BEST when they met for the second meeting of Next Generation CMT on 3rd September.
The group were invited by CMT to hear about innovative work involving the residents of Handsworth and Lozells, and to pitch their own ideas for the project directly to programme leader, Joyce Springer-Amadedon.
Joyce attended the meeting to brief the group on the background to her work with the community, which stemmed from the Handsworth disturbances in 2005.
The Generation BEST team heard how Joyce and her staff are working hard to involve members of the various communities there in analyzing the area’s strengths and difficulties and sharing their aspirations for the future.
In a lively debate, the group were invited to discuss the issues involved in developing a people’s forum in the area, consider methods of monitoring community tensions and work out how to engage young people in activities during the summer months.
CMT members were highly impressed with the eleven recommendations, which were fed back at their meeting the following week by Dale Webb, Development Officer for Housing and Constituencies.
Next Generation CMT is run on a rolling membership basis so if you would like to find out any more information or take part in a future event then please contact Generation BEST via lotus notes mailbox GenerationBest or on 675 1545.
