Employees fast-track leadership skills

26 members of the council’s younger employees’ network, Generation BEST, have become the first in the council to benefit from a new training programme for new and aspiring managers in local government.

Steps to Leadership Accelerate is run by the West Midlands Local Government Association and is the only programme of its kind to provide leadership techniques along with broadening delegates' understanding of local government and the public sector to prepare for future roles.

The programme runs over 6 months and covers 4 key modules including motivating and managing a team, partnership working, officer and elected member relations and self promotion.

The course is designed to give young managers a better understanding of what it takes to manage people, and to help them succeed in local government by understanding the importance of good relations with partner organisations and council leaders.

At the end of their course, delegates will have completed an Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) recognised development programme and benefit from one year’s ILM membership.

Generation BEST celebrated its first birthday in December, and offers opportunities for training and development, new experiences and challenges, and networking for anyone in the early stages of their career with the council. We have 200 members, so why not add your name to our email list to hear about forthcoming events and opportunities? Contact us on 675 1545 or email ‘Generationbest’.
