Named after Joseph Chamberlain, one of Birmingham’s most respected civic leaders, the Chamberlain awards scheme is designed to reward Birmingham City Council (BCC) workers who go the extra mile to ensure that the people of Birmingham receive quality services.

Joseph Chamberlain was a gifted innovator who became Mayor of Birmingham in 1873, he put in place a series of reforms that revolutionised how local government provide and deliver services, including the development of water-works and gas-works. At BCC, we believe that all our citizens deserve the best services and that Birmingham should continue to be one of the best places in which to live, work and relax.

The Chamberlain Awards fits in with Human Resources strategies to raise performance, increase morale and share best practice. Research has shown that corporate recognition can boost workforce motivation, increase productivity and enhance the profile and reputation of BCC as a leading local authority.

.....And importantly a simple 'thank you' is personally rewarding and makes us feel that our contribution is valued.

The 18th century French philosopher Voltaire understood the importance of recognition when he said:

'Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.'
