Byron Batten

I joined Birmingham City Council in 1993 as an unqualified social worker for the then Social Services Department, having previously worked as a manager in the private residential care sector for a number of years. Prior to that I worked in engineering for BT. In 2003, I changed direction and took up a communications role within the team working closely with the directorate and corporate communication teams, before taking on more business and project development opportunities.
Becoming BEST Leader in 2007 was a great opportunity for me and gave me new enthusiasm for my job, my team and the wider directorate. I attended everything that was associated with BEST and volunteered to help whenever I could. The role prompted me to challenge working practices within my team, that weren’t best for our service and instilled the core values, which helped to steer the team to be more productive.
Joining Generation BEST added to the opportunities to develop my skills and knowledge and impart any learning to my team. I truly believe it’s possible to have a ‘good day at work’ and it starts with good team working relationships and I’m excited at being a part of the process to assist teams in that area.
Making the leap to join the BEST team in October 2010 was a natural progression and I’m excited for what the future holds for BEST and the work we will be doing to make that good day at work happen every day.
