Bringing the Team Together

Last updated 26th March 2009

BEST leader Wynne Parry from Corporate Finance in the Chief Executive’s Directorate found himself with a challenge on his hands when the time came for his BEST workshop. With a team split across several sites and numerous staff changes throughout the year he wondered if BEST would bring any common ground. But the team pulled together to come up with eight BEST actions to make a big difference to the way they worked together.

Using their regular team meetings to drive momentum, communication problems are now a thing of the past! The telephone directory has been updated, extension numbers appear in everybody’s email signature and electronic diaries have been opened up for everyone to view. Voyager has significantly reduced the need for sharing spreadsheets and work on standardising the salary monitoring schemes will continue through to their next workshop in 2009.

And by far the most significant outcome has been to create a space where the whole team can meet on a regular basis. Along with Margaret Ashton-Gray and Annette Rowe, the team have successfully transformed a previously abandoned area on the third floor of the Council House, once full of filing boxes and broken chairs, into a private haven with comfortable recycled soft seating a coffee table and a warm radiator! Far from being a disparate team, the group now have a dedicated common room to meet and relax together.
