BEST Leader Conference – 8 July 2011

Hundreds of BEST Leaders took over the Banqueting Suite in the Council House on Friday 8 July to hear an update from Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes on Birmingham City Council’s current situation and the changes taking place. The half day conference was hosted by Councillor Rudge, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources and Chief Executive, Stephen Hughes.

BEST Leaders were able to ask their questions directly to the Chief Executive and received an honest and open response. Councillor Rudge presented several BEST ‘living it’ awards to worthy leaders who have been carrying out fantastic work and truly living the values. The leaders took part in table top discussions, sharing their views on the Birmingham Contract, PDR’s/People Solutions and Employee Engagement. These topics were a chance for leaders to have their questions answered by experienced facilitator from the topic area.

As part of the session, there was a networking market place where our internal partners had the opportunity to talk to leaders about their service area and share their key messages. The Lord Mayor Anita Ward attended the conference to meet with Council employees, show her support to the programme and promote her four chosen charities for 2011/12.

To enable leaders to be prepared for the challenges which they face, we held a leading on change session. Leaders listened to an inspirational and motivating film which was thought provoking and intended to highlight the importance of embracing change.

The conference was a huge success with the evaluation showing the table top discussions to be one of the most useful parts of the session.

One Leader commented “I really enjoyed today, it was a great event. We need to focus on the future of the Council and what we as BEST leaders can do to help staff through the changes taking place.”
