Adult and Communities Power their way to Success
The Social Work team at the Mary Rose Unit within Adults & Communities in Bordesley Green provide a day care service for aging adults with learning disabilities. The team help people suffering from a range of disabilities and health issues from loss of skills (motor and/or memory) to Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Their role is to put together individual care packages specific to the needs of service users, this is called a Core Plan. The plan provides the user with a timetable of the different activities they will undertake in any given week, these activities are based on a wide range of needs, wants and desires. The Unit offers the users a number of resources, computers/food preparation areas/line dancing or a weekly library, are among just a few.
During their BEST workshop, the team came up with an action to produce a DVD showing ‘a week in the life of’. However, after careful consideration and discussion the team opted put together a PowerPoint presentation which would be available on CD or email as this option would be more informative and cost effective. The PowerPoint would be sent out to potential service users or people looking for information about the service. The team approached the A&C Communications team for advice on how best to proceed with this action. This cross team working has resulted in the team being able to produce a very detailed presentation including pictures which is not only very informative but promotes them as a team.
BEST Leader Amina Taylor said "BEST helped the team focus on things we do well and gave us ideas on how to improve in the future. With the PowerPoint presentation it can help promote the service we provide, to potentially new service users, carers and our professional partners, as well as our Directorate, (most of whom have never heard of us!)."
The team feel that “BEST means Best at Mary Rose, where we promote choice, give new opportunities and enable individuals to live a life"
